It had been the longest morning of my life.
Bonnie hadnât shown up to the office on time, and I'd tried my hardest to cover for her. I imagined sheâd either slept through her alarm or couldnât walk five paces away from the sofa without needing another paracetamol. Then there was the briefing that had taken place at the station, which was probably best going unmentioned from the sheer number of questions the team had hit me with. Repeatedly. It had ended with Annie and Chris darting off to visit the college Rachel White had supposedly belonged to according to Kelly McDonald and had left armed with a promise that they were going to stop off at Alexandra Roseâs alleged flat along the way to see what they could dig up, whilst DCI Aikman and I had received another phone call from the coroner's office as a matter of urgency. That pretty much described our journey over to the morgue.
Urgent and reckless, too.
We watched on as Dr Lee bustled around and busied himself with cleaning a scalpel. Repeatedly. The crazily patterned shirt heâd worn last time had been swapped out for a turquoise one, which wasnât any better on the eyes. If anything, it was worse.
âYou called, Doctor?â I ignored the prominent bruises on DCI Aikmanâs jawline, the deep violet shade of his chin clashing with the doctorâs choice of attire. âA matter of utmost importance, or so we were told?â
âI did.â Doctor Lee paused mid-wipe and discarded the micro-fibre cloth. âI warned you the last time we met that I was going to do some digging on the nurse I mentioned, Miss Sandra Holmes, in relation to the pink-haired girl you found in the river--â
âHer name is Rachel White,â DCI Aikman sniffed. âBy some stroke of sheer dumb luck, my inspector was able to get an identification on her.â
âIt wasnât in the report. I even checked it over when I arrived at the office this morning. First thing,â Doctor Leeâs glasses steamed up. Wincing at the blunder, I held my palm up to signify to the Chief that I would handle this.
âItâs been a long night, and it slipped my mind. It wonât happen again.â
âI do like being the last to know,â Doctor Lee said dryly, then took the thick frames off and wiped them on his lab coat. He put them on again, his ears red with indignation. âWhat I was going to say is that thereâs definitely something we missed the last time around. Iâm not sure whether to be glad or ashamed. I found a couple of needle pricks underneath what I now know to be Miss Whiteâs armpit. The needle prick is small and almost impossible to see, but no match for my eyes.â He blinked his bug eyes twice, and I had a hard time believing heâd be able to see anything if it was about to hit him in the face. âMiss White has been injected with a substance of some description, which, if
